Universal USB Installer aka UUI is a Live Linux Bootable USB Creator that allows you to choose from a selection of Linux Distributions to put on your USB Flash Drive. The Universal USB Installer is easy to use. Simply choose a Live Linux Distribution, the ISO file, your Flash Drive and, Click Install. Upon completion, you should have a ready to run bootable USB Flash Drive with your select operating system installed. Other features include; Persistence (if available) – Ubuntu, Xubuntu, and Lubuntu Casper Persistence feature works with FAT32 or NTFS formatted drives. Larger than 4GB casper-rw is possible only when the USB drive is formatted with the NTFS filesystem.
NOTE: If you are looking to add multiple Linux Distributions, System Diagnostic Tools, Antivirus Utilities, and Windows Installers to your bootable USB, use YUMI – Multiboot USB Software, instead.
Now that we've prepared everything for the OS installation, it's a good time to plug in your flash drive. Before starting, make a backup of its contents to your computer just to be on the safe side. Take note of its drive letter, in our example, it's drive G:/, and its capacity is 8GB.

The Windows to Go option requires the USB drive be NTFS formatted and have 20GB+ free space to hold the virtual disk. Many flash drives you might find at local department stores won't be fast enough. You'll need a Very Fast Flash Drive. When Windows boots from the USB for the first time, it'll go through the setup process and then reboot. You'll need to boot using your Windows to Go flash drive a second time to finalize the setup process and finally boot into your full Portable Windows.
UUI Expects the Volume Label of your USB drive to be UUI in order for OpenSUSE, CentOS and several other distributions to boot. UUI attempts to automatically create this Volume Label, however it can sometimes fail. Please ensure that the Volume Label of your USB remains UUI if you expect distributions to boot!
Persistence feature is currently broken with Newer Debian and Debian based distributions due to significant changes upstream. Debian now requires a rename of the persistent block file and label from live-rw to persistence and must hold a persistence.conf file containing / Union. I will be working on making the necessary changes to provide a fix as time allows.
If you're using Universal-USB-Installer-2.0.0.0.exe and you still receive Insane primary (MBR) partition notices,

Your USB drive may be improperly formatted, contains more than one partition or MBR, or your BIOS is not properly detecting the USB drive and its firmware needs to be updated. You can try these methods to Format and Restore your USB Drive
An Error (1) occurred while executing syslinux.
If you encounter a message stating
An error (1) occurred while executing syslinux. Your USB drive won't be bootable.
The most likely cause is that your USB drive is formatted as exFAT or some other unsupported format. You'll need to reformat as fat32 (currently preferred) or NTFS.

Install Ubuntu From UsbMany Flash Drives ship USB-FDD formatted and some systems will not detect or even boot USB-FDD. I have found that most systems can however boot USB-ZIP, and or USB-HDD. If you are having a hard time getting your BIOS to detect your flash drive, you can try to format it as USB-HDD or USB-ZIP using BOOTICE Download messenger to computer. (GET IT HERE), and then proceed to use Universal USB Installer to put your chosen Distro on USB.
OTHER IMPORTANT NOTES:
If you're running a Windows Vista or 7 Installer from your USB, after the first reboot, remove the flash drive and let the pc complete from the hard disk.
When browsing for an ISO, UUI will only display ISO Files that match exactly what the tool is asking for. For example, if you chose to install Ubuntu 10.10 Desktop i386, you should not expect the tool to display your ubuntu-10.10-netbook-i386.iso as you have not chosen to install the netbook variant.
Auto Detection: If you run Universal USB Installer from the same directory containing an installable ISO, the script should Auto Detect the ISO and bypass step 2.
* Although you can use an NTFS formatted USB, Ubuntu based 'persistence' features will only work with a Fat16 or Fat32 formatted drive. Additionally some Linux Distributions will not boot from an NTFS formatted USB.
This tool does not support adding, installing, and booting from multiple Linux Distributions. Only One Distribution can be installed per USB drive. However the YUMI Multiboot USB Creator can be used to create a Multi System USB Device.
To try an ISO that isn't listed, simply choose one of the the last three options in Step 1. I recommend 'Try Unlisted Linux ISO (GRUB)' because it seems to be the most successful. Please inform me of any unlisted 'Linux ISOs' you get to work via these options, and I'll make a note to add them to the list.
NOTE: OpenSUSE DVD ISOs that exceed 4GB will not work due to the Fat32 limitation.
Ubuntu Server 'Failed to copy file from CD-ROM' Error (should currently be resolved)?
The Universal USB Installer should run from within Linux using WINE. However, the Fat32 format option does not work. Additionally, Syslinux must be manually installed onto the USB when using UUI.

Write IMG or ISO to USB – Win32 Disk ImagerHow to easily Write an IMG or ISO file to a USB flash drive. Win32 Disk Imager is a free disk imaging and cloning tool used to write raw disk images to a USB flash drive from Windows. As you might have guessed, this tool can also create a backup disk image of a USB flash drive. The backup image can then be used to clone a USB flash drive or restore the original drive. Also included is a built in hash checker which helps to ensure your files aren't corrupted.
Much like Etcher, it also works to direct copy data from .IMG or .ISO files to a removable USB disk. Functioning just like a dd raw write command by overwriting the entire disk with raw data from the source file. As a result, any existing content on the drive is overwritten. Some consider this method destructive because the entire disk, including the boot record and partition table data, becomes overwritten. In some cases the device might even appear unwritable. However, this is almost always only temporary.
You can easily restore a USB flash drive to its original state after using this type of tool.

Etcher – USB ISO Burner and Clone ToolEtcher is essentially an ISO to USB Burner and USB Clone tool. Created by Balena, this open source direct image writing and disk cloning software can be used to write, etch or burn an image .img or .iso file onto a flash drive. In addition the utility functions as a USB disk cloning tool, and can be used to easily clone a USB flash drive to another of equal size or larger.
Ventoy – Another Bootable USB ToolVentoy is another neat Bootable USB Creation Tool that can be used to boot and run multiple ISO files from USB. Its functionality is simple. Just Format your thumb drive using the tool, then drag and drop your chosen ISO files onto your flash drive. The ISO files are directly copied over and added to the boot menu. This should result in a ready to boot USB device. Ventoy is an Open Source tool, so everyone is welcome to dig in to see how it works. It supports legacy BIOS and UEFI boot options, and also works with UEFI Secure Boot. It is important to note that your flash drive can still be used for regular storage as well.

However, a tool called Rufus, created by Pete Batard, can make this task simple. Rufus can also be used to create a Bootable USB version of a given distro from an ISO or image File. Rufus was originally similar in appearance and operation to the HP USB Format tool 'HPUSBFW.exe', and shares many of the same features. However, Rufus is Open Source.
NOTE: This post was written in 2011. Rufus has since evolved into a tool that can be used to format, create master boot records, and install an ISO or Image based distributions to USB. Much like the Universal USB Installer (UUI).
Using UNetbootin to create a Linux USB from LinuxHow to Install and Use UNetbootin from Linux: UNetbootin is a Live USB creation tool that can be used to create a Live Linux USB flash drive. One nice feature of UNetbootin is that the tool is offered for Windows and Linux. In the following, I will cover how to quickly get UNetbootin up and running within an Ubuntu Linux Operating Environment.
SARDU – Multiboot USB Creator (Windows)SARDU is another nice Windows based Multiboot USB Creator that can also be used to create Multiboot CD/DVD's. Created by Davide Costa, SARDU enables you to create a Multiboot UFD containing your basic essential Utilities, Antivirus, and Windows XP/7 Installers. On top of that, SARDU offers the built in ability to Defragment your USB Drive, and burn an ISO to CD/DVD.
MultiSystem – Create a MultiBoot USB from LinuxHow to Create a MultiBoot USB Flash Drive from Linux: Multisystem is an awesome tool created by LiveUSB.info, that works similar to our Windows based MultiBootISOs USB creator, but was created for use within Linux. It also uses Grub2 instead of Grub Legacy, and can be run from within Ubuntu Linux to create a Custom Multiboot UFD containing your favorite Bootable Live Linux Distributions.
LiveUSB Install – Live USB CreatorYumi Pendrive Linux DownloadLiveUSB Install is another nice third party Live Linux Bootable USB Creation tool created by Krasimir S. Stefanov. It can be used to quickly install a Live Linux distribution of your choice on a thumbdrive from ISO, CD/DVD, or torrent download. Other unique features include the ability to customize the syslinux.cfg file, use WinGrub, or write an IMG file to the flash drive.
XBOOT – Multiboot ISO USB Creator WindowsXBOOT is yet another neat little Multiboot ISO USB Creator. It is a Windows based application that can be used to create a Live Multiboot Bootable USB or even a Multiboot ISO file that can then be burnt to a CD/DVD. XBOOT supports many Linux Distributions and Utilities, and allows you to use your choice of a Grub or Syslinux bootloader. Also included is a built in QEMU emulator. Enabling users to boot an ISO from within Windows.
Linux Live USB Creator (LiLi) from WindowsTheLinux Live USB Creator is an awesome tool that can be used to install various Linux compilations, versions and distributions to a USB Flash Drive. The end result is a Bootable Live USB (in some cases with Persistence as well). Created by Thibaut Lauzière, LiLi USB Creator formerly known as uSbuntu Live Creator, can create your Linux USB Flash Drive from a source Image, ISO or CD. It can also download the IMG or ISO for you. But it doesn't stop there. LiLi USB Creator can also install a Portable Virtualbox on the USB device. You can then either boot the Linux installation from inside Windows emulated using Virtualbox on USB or Boot from USB natively (if your computer supports booting from USB).
Using UNetbootin to create a Live Linux USBUNetbootin is a Live USB creation tool that can be used to create a Live Linux USB flash drive from an ISO. Many Linux distributions are supported out of the box with custom install options available for Linux distributions that are not. It is important to mention that Live Linux USB flash drives created with this tool, do not currently utilize a persistence feature. The resulting USB Linux install will function just as it does from a CD. By default you will not be able to save and restore your changes.
Using the Fedora USB Creator from WindowsThe following tutorial will show you how to create a Fedora 9, 10, 11 + USB flash drive using Windows. Fedora is a Linux distribution that is sponsored by Red Hat and is both driven and maintained by the community. It is comprised of only free and open source software and will always remain free to use, modify and redistribute. Recently, Luke Macken and Kushal Das, both active in the Fedora community have put together an intuitive and super easy to use liveusb-creator which can be used to make a Fedora Live USB flash drive. In addition, USB Fedora utilizes a Persistent feature, enabling a user to save and restore changes on subsequent boots. In the following, we will show you how it works.
